Suggestions for removing factory decals

I recently bought a 1999 Dodge Dakota R/T reg. cab in black. The paint is factory original and is in very good shape. Since I purchased the truck I've buffed out the paint and gave it several coats of Zainos so it looks very good in my humble opinion. The factory R/T decals across the doors and tailgate are red. I've been considering removing them b/c I prefer a more subtle look. I'm concerned that removing these decals may leave a shadow in which case I'm better off just leaving them on.

Has any one removed decals from a vehicle this old and was there a problem such as I've mentioned? Anyone have any experience and more importantly advice on how to proceed? I'd appreciate hearing from you.

When you're talking about a 10 year old vehicle you're always going to have paint fade. The paint under the decals is going to be darker than the paint that is showing and buffing won't help to fade or blend the two shades.. Even under perfect climate controled conditions with UV from the artificial lights you will still get enough fade in the exposed paint to show where the decals were.

The only two options you really have if you remove the old decals is to either A) Remove the decals and get the truck repainted or B) replace the decals with a factory sized decal kit that can be laid right over the place where the original decals were.

Re: Suggestions for removing factory decals

That is what I figured but hoped that maybe someone had came up with a revolutionary and sure-fire new method. I appreciate your response and thank you.
